Pind Daan

According to Hindu rituals it is believed that the spirit of the dead person remains near their loved ones and is not able to gain salvation (moksha). So, we perform Pind Daan of the dead people. The successors need to perform “Pind Daan in Gaya” to free the spirits of their ancestors. It is said that until the successor performs “Shradh in Gaya” the spirits wait and suffer pain and cannot leave their loved ones though they have lost their human body. The spirits cannot free themselves of this material world and need “Pind Daan” to help them leave this world and gain eternal peace. They get mukti from the cycle of birth and death. It is said that they wait eagerly for their sons to perform their “Pind Daan” and also said that they hover around when their “shradh” is being performed. So, people from all over the world come to Gaya to pay their last rites to their ancestors so that they attain “moksha” from this world. When people die unnatural death and their soul is unsatisfied “Pind Daan” helps them gain salvation. People also feel after “Pind Daan” their life has improved in different aspects thus implying that they get blessings when “Pind Daan” is performed for their ancestors. Gaya is also known as “Moksha Dhaam”. According to mythology Lord Vishnu killed demon Gayasur here. So, Gaya derives its name from the demon. Thus, Gaya became very holy and people who visit this place are known to get freed from their sins. Also, therefore “Shradh” ceremony performed here helps attain Moksha of the dead people. Pind Daan in Gaya is performed in Gaya in Vishnupad Temple on the bank of river Phalgu. “Pind Daan” is usually performed by the son or male member of the family. The ancestors i.e the dead people of the family are offered balls made of rice and flour also called ”Pind”. “Pind Daan” is usually performed during “Pitra-Paksha” just before Navratri begins. It is a period of fortnight when it is performed by thousands of people in Gaya every year.

According to Kurmpuran , Pind Daan is expected to be done by people for their ancestors for the salvation and mukti from cycle of life and death. It also benefits the person who has performed the Shradh ceremony and brings him good luck.
